Reading Day
An infuriating FACT: The 3rd grade literacy rate is used to predict how many prisons to build. In response, the Greater Sacramento Urban League Young Professionals group has adopted two 1st grade classes at Fairbanks Elementary for a program called Reading Day. Each month volunteers will spend one hour in their classrooms reading books and leading interactive activities related to the book themes. The objective of the activities is to excite students about reading while strengthening their comprehension and processing skills. The ultimate goal of the program is to increase the number of 3rd graders reading at grade level from the current rate of 37% in Sacramento. If you can make time once a month on a Friday from 8 am - 9 am we'd love to have more volunteers!
Handshakes and Ties
Volunteer with us to educate young men about the importance of first impressions by not only teaching them the proper ways to greet people in a professional setting, but also educating them on appropriate work attire. This signature YP program includes group and individual mentoring, a Q&A session, and step by step instructions on how to master the art of tying and adjusting a tie. If you are interested in volunteering in our Handshakes and Ties program, sign up here.
Christmas with YP
Now in its 13th year the Christmas with YP event allows the Young Professionals to give back during the holidays. We sponsor a number of families by purchasing items for them and then we come together to wrap the items and throw a holiday party in their honor.
