National Day of Service is Friday, April 24, 2015!
National Day of Service (NDoS) is the National Urban League Young Professionals’ signature community service initiative bringing together NULYP chapters nationwide for a momentous day of unified community impact around a singular theme. This year’s NDoS theme is S.T.E.M. Education and Careers. NDOS 2015 is centered on the NUL’s education and jobs agenda items, and the role that science, technology, engineering (arts and agriculture), and mathematics (STEM/STEAM) play in economic development.
Volunteers Needed!
As part of our NDoS efforts we will be participating in Code For Hood at the Greater Sacramento Urban League Headquarters Friday, April 10 - Sunday, April 12. Code For Hood is a non-profit that focuses on hosting hackathons and coding workshops in urban neighborhoods. Its mission is to help educate and enrich the lives of minority, low income and at risk youth, between the ages of 12-21. Code For Hood works with cities, schools, and other non-profit organizations to help foster STEM initiatives within these demographics.
All weekend long we will be focusing on mobile and web development, software development, video game development, basic electronics, and design. A day and a half will be dedicated to workshops that include:
Basic Coding
Video Game Design
Design Thinking
The last day will be the competition day of the hackathon. Each team will be mentored and guided during their project build, using the skills they used in the workshops. Teams will present their projects to a panel of judges and the top 2 teams will win prizes.
